Our Aims

The Shoosmith Gallery was created to celebrate the life and work of Thurston Laidlaw Shoosmith (1865-1933) and the Shoosmith family. His subtle, yet distinctive style of watercolour painting made him a leading figure in the art scene of his hometown of Northampton.

In the early 20th century, he gained an international reputation for his watercolour work through London exhibitions and published articles, as well as continuing to dominate the arts scene in Northampton. His works sold for sums that were the equivalent of half a year’s wages for an agricultural worker of the time.

Art therapy is a creative method of expression used as a therapeutic technique.

The British Association of Art Therapists defines art therapy as "a form of psychotherapy that uses art media as its primary mode of expression and communication."

The purpose of art therapy is essentially one of healing. Art therapy can be successfully applied to clients with physical, mental or emotional problems, diseases and disorders. Any type of visual art and art medium can be employed within the therapeutic process, including painting, drawing, sculpting, photography, and digital art.

If you are interested in art therapy sessions, please get in touch using the contact form at the bottom of this page.
